Reflecting on 2017
At the LaunchLab, 2017 started out with a lot of expectation, having just completed some exciting programmes for Nedbank, Santam and ATTACQ, and a large influx of new businesses and entrepreneurs to work with, adding to the already exciting community that is here.
This year we hosted more than 12 meetups with our partners, including Machine Intelligence Institute Africa (MIIA), Stellenbosch Digital and Intel.
- 154 attendees at 5 LaunchLab talks.
- 130 people at our two Business Mixers, connecting our Startups with Investors and corporate customers.
- 420 Participants in our Ideas Programmes, including challenges for Water and Waste Management, ATTACQ Smart Cities, Santam Safety, and Mercedes-Benz South Africa Innovation.
We have put 10 startups through the Lean Iterator programme, the content of which is made available by local South African experts.
Our Countdown Programme, which is designed to help startup founders fill out a due diligence dataroom in line with what top VCs look for (content of which was received from Knife Capital) had 26 startups go through it.
We made more than 60 direct connections between our startups and potential corporate and institutional customers and investors, resulting in many signed contracts.
17 businesses raised funding.
4 of our startups received equity funding directly from corporates, leap-frogging traditional funding models.
We had 4 startups complete prominent accelerator programmes, 1 in Techstars and 3 in Grindstone (run by Knife Capital). 2 of the Grindstone participants were 1st and 3rd overall best performing over the course of the 9 month programme (PICSA and Custos).
2017 was a busy and exciting year! Thank you for your part making it such a great success!
With new businesses joining regularly and some significant changes to LaunchLab programmes in 2018, next year will be even more exciting.
