SU Techpreneurship Centre Bootcamp

Are you interested in Data Science & Machine Learning?  Do you want to master coding in Python? Are you interested in learning how Data Science & Machine Learning can solve real-world business problems? Are you looking for practical experience? If so, then read on!

SU LaunchLab, in partnership with the SU School for Data Science and Computational Thinking, has launched the SU Techpreneurship Centre (SU TPC). The SU TPC offers courses which bridges the gap between technology and entrepreneurship, by providing candidates with both in-depth programming skills in data science and machine learning, and how to use these skills in industry . Many of our participants also do internships after the course –  90% of our participants landed interviews with our partner companies after taking our course.

THE DETAILS

FORMAT & CONTENT

During a 4-week, full-time, immersive Bootcamp in the 2021 July/August SU winter holiday, you will learn the content listed below, taught by experts from the SU LaunchLab and SU School for Data Science and Computational Thinking. The course is taught through interesting lectures, case studies and assignments. It will be possible to attend the course remotely.

The following topics are covered:

  • Understanding the “World of Data”: what exactly is Data Science, Machine Learning (ML), AI, Big Data,  and how do they all fit together
  • ML Techniques and Algorithms: unsupervised learning, supervised learning, and an intro to deep learning and neural networks
  • ML in Python: learn all the different tools and libraries in Python which can accelerate your ML models
  • Understanding and building an ML pipeline: from data sourcing to building your own ML models from scratch
  • How to effectively approach a data-related problem
  • How to most effectively interpret results from your data and communicate these results
  • Identifying business use cases for data science and ML through doing interesting case studies and projects
  • Other tech soft skills: SCRUM, Agile, & Kanban
  • Interesting guest lectures on ML & Data Science  in the industry

DATES

The Bootcamp will run during the winter semester break, from 13 July to 6 August 2021.

WHO CAN APPLY

The programme is open to anyone to apply from all academic levels (not just SU students or graduates). The course is coding-intensive, thus we recommend that candidates understand the programming – but the programming language itself does not matter. NO prior experience with Python or machine learning is required – that’s why we’re here!

INTERNSHIPS

For participants looking for internships, we have great industry partners who are always looking for new talent. While we naturally cannot guarantee an internship, 90% of our candidates interested in internships landed interviews through our programme, and 70% have been signed so far.

COST

Total cost of the 4-week, full-time programme is as follows:

  • SU participant (SU students, staff, recent grads, alumni, etc.): R10,000 excl.; R11,500 VAT incl.
  • Non-SU participant: R20,000 excl.; R23,000 VAT incl.
