The Ideas smash is intended primarily to be for early-stage businesses concepts, prototypes and businesses from SU students  looking to validate their concepts or improve their technology offering to their market and gain traction for the solution they are currently working on.

The LaunchLab, in partnership with the office of the Vice Rector for Innovation, and the SRC is looking for startup business ideas in multiple Categories, including but not limited to following:

Big Data
Block Chain
Education
Advanced Manufacturing
Artificial Intelligence
Agritech and Food
Media/ Content creation (Prepare a 3mins trailer, short documentary on a range of topics. Eg sport, race, culture, comedy, TV Series, commercial the focus here should be on)
Exceptional

Entries: 
We will be receiving 3 minute video pitches online until the 25 July where you can upload a file on YouTube of your concept and idea. We held an info session on the 16 May at the LaunchLab to provide context to the opportunities. This session was hosted by Prof. Eugene Cloete, the Dean of Research and  Innovation.

Selection: 
After receiving hundreds of entries, we will shortlist 15 Ideas to pitch to a panel of judges at the LaunchLab on the 8th of August 2017.

Pitching Platform
The finalists will be invited to our Ideas Pitching Platform, where they will get 4 minutes to pitch their business.

Criteria:

The following points should be addressed withing the pitch submission:

  • Problem and need
  • Value proposition
  • Social Issue addressed/Target market
  • Sustainability and profit model
  • Team

The Final Event 
Then our judges will have 4 minutes to ask questions of the entrepreneurs. At the end of the evening,  judges will select the winning concepts and Ideas.
Winning Ideas or concepts would get the following benefits;
●     A share of R 70 000
●     A certificate of recognition from the office of the Rector of Research and Innovation
