Vacancy: Financial Analyst

Stellenbosch University LaunchLab is seeking a hard-working finance professional with 3-5+ years of experience as an investment banking analyst or management consultant to join its team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience building financial models, conducting company analysis & participating in or leading fundraising processes. A Finance related degree from a well-recognised institution and top tier experience in investment banking or in a management consulting practice is required for this role. An MBA/Relevant Masters/CA(SA) CFA Charter or similar accreditation will be favourably viewed.


An entrepreneurial aptitude, matched by a willingness to get your hands dirty while delivering solutions that deliver pan-African impact are essential qualities in the successful candidate.


Position: Financial Analyst

Hours: 20 hours per week for 6 weeks in a probationary role. 40+ hours per week if the position transitions to full-time employment 

Reporting: Reports directly to Director of Business Development 

Salary: Competitive Market Related Salary and potential equity exposure

Timing: 1 May 2020 start date 


Specific Duties:

  • Financial and Market Analysis
    • Ability to transform raw data into valuable insights for internal presentation to Senior Leaders as well as external audiences such as the Board, investors & partners;
    • Passion for analysing early-stage companies to assist teams in generating actionable operational insights in order to increase company performance;
    • Aptitude for designing & building dashboards and business intelligence reports;
    • Develop market analysis tools and insights
    • Execute valuations, feasibility analysis
  • Model Building
    • Deep experience & passion for building both simple & complex  financial models to assist in company operations, fundraising & internal monitoring
    • An ability to transform numbers into insights based on a holistic understanding of the inner workings of an early-stage company 
  • Fundraising
    • Experience in a Corporate Finance capacity with an understanding of numerous financial instruments; deal team or transaction experience a must
    • Deal structuring experience and ability to develop and motivate credit proposals
    • Ability to quickly grow into a role in which you may own a fundraise from start to finish including business development, Term Sheet negotiation, documentation, and funding
    • A passion for understanding capital markets and a desire to grow in this capacity


Qualifications & Skill Requirements:

  • 3-5+ years of business finance or other relevant experience; MBA/CFA/CA(SA) is preferred
  • Finance, Accounting, Economics, or Statistics are preferred major fields
  • Excellent financial modeling experience & skills; coding and/or data query/data management ability a plus
  • Proven work experience in a quantitatively-heavy role
  • CFA, CA(SA), MBA, FMVA or similar designations preferred
  • Strong quantitative and analytical competency
  • Self-starter with excellent interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills
  • Comfort dealing with ambiguity and the ability to work independently
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
